Psoriasis Medicine

Psoriasis is a chronic skin and scalp condition which varies in severity from small red, itchy, scaly patches to full body coverage. It can affect skin on any part of the body, including genitals, scalp, fingernails and toenails.

Psoriasis Treatments

Topical treatments are often used in the beginning if the condition is mild. However they take time to apply, can stain clothing and may irritate normal skin. Some have an odor. If one withdraws from topical agents, such as corticosteroids, there can be a dramatic rebound of the condition.

Many sufferers opt for medicines, taken internally. The following are some commonly used medications:

Methotrexate is effective in controlling psoriasis, not eliminating it. It slows the prolific growth of skin cells while it suppresses the immune system. It has the danger, however, of being highly toxic, with sometimes life threatening side effects. To insure it is not harming the patient, blood count and liver function tests are suggested one week after the initial dose and each time the dose is increased. It is recommended for very severe forms of psoriasis.

Cyclosporine, also an immunosupressant drug, is useful in accomplishing speedy, short term control of psoriasis. It however, has the potential of creating drug reactions when used with other drugs. It also can elevate blood pressure and interfere with kidney function.

Acitretin, (an oral retinoid) is effective in controlling pustular psoriasis (raised pustules surrounded by red skin). It would seem the safest and at first seem natural as it relates to Vitamin A; however it is a synthetic. It should be taken in small does to minimize retinoid side effects, and liver dysfunction should be tested for. Two or three years after discontinuing treatment it can have adverse effects on child bearing.

Biologics are manufactured proteins that interrupt specific aspects of the immune process involved in psoriasis. This type of drug is relatively new and is expensive. Their long term effect on the immune system is unknown, though may not be has harmful as other immune suppressant drugs such as Methotrexate, because it does not effect the whole immune system.

XP - 828L A Canadian life science and technology company has developed a new oral medication called XP - 828L extracted from whey by a patented process. It is supposed to be effective and safe for mild to moderate psoriasis.

Other Medications. Though not sanctioned by many other countries, fumaric acid esters have been used in Germany for over 20 years to treat psoriasis. There are other drugs used, but not exclusively for psoriasis, such as sulfasalazine and antimetabolite tioguanine. The cytotoxic ("cell-toxic") agent hydroxyurea, and the immunosupressants mycophenolate mofetil, azathioprine and oral tacrolimus have also been used.

History. Historically, psoriasis treatments have been bizarre as well as toxic-- cat feces on lesions in ancient Egypt; other ancients used semen and goose oil, soup made from venomous snakes, as well as concoctions of urine and wasp droppings. In the 18th and 19th, Fowler’s solution which contained arsenic was used; Xrays were used during the mid 1900's.

Still needed are the insistence, the discovery and use of safe treatments for this all too common skin disease.

Ultrabalm, while it is not medicine, but rather a soothing, healthful skin cream relief that combines Vitamin A, D & E with Lanolin and the finest in Aloe Vera, fits the safe criteria. Here is what some of our Ultra Balm users say about how Ultra Balm has helped them with this chronic skin condition:

“I live in Decatur Illinois and found your Ultra-Balm at a Home & Garden Show there. I’ve had a bad case of Psoriasis for over 20 years. Before Ultra Balm I think I tried everything, from Prescription drugs, invasive injections to numerous alternative medicine treatments but none ever gave me the relief that Ultra Balm has. At first I was very hesitant to buy it because of all the past product failures I’d experienced. I am so glad I gave it one last chance! I put my Ultra Balm on daily and my skin is no longer cracked and dry, no longer itches, and the soreness I used to have is GONE! I want everyone to experience the success I’ve had with Ultra Balm and encourage anyone with a severe skin problem to just TRY IT, especially if they’ve tried a lot of other solutions that have failed! They will really be amazed at the results”!

“I have found your product to be a blessing. I have been suffering with psoriasis on my hands and feet, and the medicine that my doctor was prescribing for me was too strong, therefore making it worse. Since I discovered Ultra Balm, the condition of my hands and feet has greatly improved, and the dry, chapped skin is being replaced by healthy smooth skin. My coworkers at the Tool & Die Company that I work for have been so impressed with results of your product that they have urged me to order Ultra Balm for them too. That's why I placed a multiple order.
